A time capsule and someone’s dream I’m sure…

In 1961, Mr Wright bought a piece of land on the outskirts of High Stanghow, a tiny hamlet on the fringe of the North Yorkshire Moors and proceeded to build a self-build Colt house. The wooden-frame, cedar-clad construction used by Colt Houses was relatively new to the local area and one of which was certainly radical in it’s era, originating from an international Swedish design.

The house is a first time on the market, having been built by the seller back in the early 1960’s and granted, it does need some work, regardless of whether you love a 1960s decorating scheme. Of course, that means the house is down as a renovation project, possibly even something to extend and rework if you get the relevant permissions. Personally, we would keep much of what is here in place, depending on the current condition and we think the design has aged well and with the right amount of updating, this could easily be a 1960s house for the 21st century. Even allowing for that, this amazing ‘retro’ property was designed with great style and panache and no doubt, was built for it’s location.

The house sits on a good sized plot close to the main Whitby Road which leads to the spectacular North Yorkshire Moors National Park along with the further coastlines of Staithes, Sandsend, Whitby and Scarborough and enjoys an open aspect set back from the main road and one which certainly takes full advantage of those panoramic views to both the front and rear.

Whatever happens, there is much to love with this home. First off, the design itself with extremely spacious open plan rooms, reception hallway, L-shaped Living Room with picture windows wrapping around the South West of the building looking out over the open countryside, with timber cladded internal walls, original features and doors, original flooring, 1960s kitchen/diner, two 1960’s ‘Avocado and Whisper Pink’ Bathrooms with his and her vanity areas and corner bath, A full length retro Master Bedroom with Bond style mirrored bedroom furniture, retro light fittings and all the 1960s décor you could ask for. It’s your dream time capsule.

Note that the property also has a useful Everest built Conservatory, some secondary double glazing, is warmed via an oil heating system and has a side covered carport (with garage door access) leading to an attached single Garage and the main entrance door to the side of the property.

Talking of the garden, the house sits on a ‘comfortable ‘ lawned plot to the front which is not overlooked with private hedging, a timber summerhouse with oil store behind and a few established trees. To the side and rear is a fence area with immediate wall and hedging – offering access ideal for storage and side driveway with parking for two to three cars leading to the carport and garage.

A true example of a spectacular retro Colt House in this area, especially one that has been largely untouched since the 1960s and a hidden rare gem.

PLEASE NOTE:
Due to the Colt construction, we invite cash buyers only. This exclusive home sits on a good size plot with the opportunity to extend STUPP – For anyone looking to create their own unique stamp then this is an ideal opportunity. Being made by COLT it is the type of property that rarely comes available, especially in the sought after location in High Stanghow which is quiet and tranquil with countryside surroundings.
