Believed to be one of the world's first purpose built railway hotels with its own private platform, The Stockton and Darlington Railway Company constructed The Zetland Hotel in 1863 to a lavish scale in order to attract a wealthy class of clientele. It is believed that Queen Victoria stayed here during a visit to the town. By the early 1970s the number of visitors to the town had dropped.
